What is a string quartet?
A String Quartet consists of 4 players – violin 1, violin 2, viola and cello.
What is a String Trio?
A String Trio consists of 3 players – violin, viola, cello. It creates a more intimate delicate sound and is suited to smaller events or venues. It costs less to hire as there are only 3 players.
Will you play outside?
Yes we are happy to play outside between the months of June – August inclusive provided it is not raining or damp underfoot, too cold to play or blowing a gale! We require some shade if it is very sunny (not as likely in Scotland!) Its always an idea to have a back-up plan in case the weather isn’t suitable. Our instruments are very delicate and valuable and this is why we need good conditions and cover to play outside. (Please note a cover is essential for us to play outside and we do not provide our own. A gazebo, large umbrella, band stand or in a doorway will require to be provided by you for outdoor events. Sometimes the venue can provide cover).
Do you take breaks?
We do not take breaks during a wedding ceremony but will require short breaks during receptions lasting longer than one hour.
What do you require at the venue?
We require 4 armless chairs for the quartet (3 for a trio) and space of about 8&8 square feet. A quartet takes up more space than you think as we have music stands and need room to bow comfortably.
Which ensemble should I hire?
We would be happy to discuss this with you as it depends on your budget, the size of venue/event, and the repertoire you choose. The quartet has a richer sound (more orchestral) and the trio and duo are more suited to smaller more intimate venues/events and budgets.
What is your booking process?
After contacting us we will send you a quote or quotes (including any travel expenses) for your chosen ensemble. If you are happy we then send/email our booking agreement for you to sign, keep a copy and send/email one back with your deposit. We ask for the balance 6 weeks prior to your event. We accept electronic bank transfers. We do not accept cash on the day.
What happens if a member of your ensemble is not available?
In the unlikely event that any of our players are not available due to unforeseen circumstances, The Quartet will provide a player or players of equal professional standard from our pool of trusted musicians.
What will you wear on the day?
At The Quartet we usually wear smart black and will always appear in appropriate dress for your occasion, but we are happy to tailor our presentation to your needs.
Will my entrance music be the correct length?
Yes! We are very experienced at finding a suitable place in the music to finish or repeating and cutting so that the piece length fits your aisle and number of people processing. There is no need to worry, just leave it to us!
